Wildland Fire Academy (FIRE 206)

DESCRIPTION

This course is designed to provide students the ability to have the certifications to work as a Wildland Firefighter on a Firefighter Hand Crew to start. CAL FIRE cadre of instructors will teach the Firefighter 1C, Wildland class portion of the academy. The Wildland Fire Academy includes State Fire Training (SFT) Firefighter 1B (Hazmat), Firefighter 1C (Wildland), and Confined Space Awareness Certification. Students will complete the cognitive exam and psychomotor skills required by SFT. Registrants are required to complete the application process with STF after course completion. Students will register online through the SRJC Fire 206: Wildland Fire Academy webpage. Once the application is completed with medical exam paperwork and equivalency documentation, the student will receive an add code to apply for FIRE 206 through SRJC admissions. OVERVIEW

An intensive study of wildland firefighting, fire control strategy and tactics, mobile attack, wildland hose lays and handline construction and wildland safety and survival, and a field skills day is included with live fire operations. Students must adhere to the same dress, rules and conduct as prescribed in the Firefighter I Academy. 

Training includes approximately 127 hours of instruction in basic firefighting skills and topics, including:

  • Protective equipment
  • Communications
  • Wildland fire suppression
  • Hazardous materials/WMDs
  • Physical fitness

Upon successful completion, students receive the following certificates:

  • CSTI Hazardous Materials First Responder Operations (FRO)
  • SFT Confined Space Awareness
  • CAL FIRE Fire Protection Orientation
  • California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (VOTH*) Wildland Firefighter Safety & Survival (Level 1)
  • California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (VOTH*) C-212: Wildland Fire Chainsaws
  • NWCG S-130: Fire Fighting Training
  • NWCG S-131: Fire Fighter Type 1
  • NWCG S-190: Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior
  • NWCG S-212: Wildland Fire Chainsaws
  • NWCG L-180: Human Factors on the Fireline 

*VOTH - Verification of Training Hours. Changes may be made.

At the termination of the academy, students will complete testing that includes an SFT online written exam and skills tests that meet SFT, IFSAC, and Pro-Board requirements for SFT Firefighter IB and Firefighter IC.

APPLICATION

The prerequisites for the Wildland Fire Academy are Fire 71 and EMC 100 and proof of completion are required.  If you have taken these courses elsewhere, you may submit equivalency documentation that will be reviewed. Fire 208.1 and Fire 290 are not prerequisites but a waiver still must be filed. Once a completed application with waiver documentation is submitted and accepted, the student will receive an add code from Nikki Soto for the class. There are no overnight stays during this class.
